So you want to cruise the Kimberley coastline, but you’re not sure where to leave your caravan? Read on …
Our family arrived in the Kimberley in the 90s via caravan (we then went on to set up the Kimberley Cruise Centre in Broome). It was magical to drive across Australia, eventually arriving at the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean. These days, our family (and the Kimberley Cruise Centre) is located in Kununurra in the eastern Kimberley.
This town sees plenty of caravans travelling through each season, including my own little Sunliner, which I brought here while doing ‘the lap’ of Oz in my vintage van.
Many of our clients ask us about caravan storage during their Kimberley cruise, so I thought it was high time that I wrote a little blog post about it! I hope that you find it helpful 🙂

First, on a personal note, I’d love to mention that the Kimberley Cruise Centre is a family run business, based right here in the Kimberley for the past 26 years. Please consider booking your Kimberley cruise with our family, rather than one of our out-of-town competitors. Thank you!
What van should I bring to the Kimberley?
This is a topic for another blog post, but, in short, if you plan on towing a van like my little 1959 Sunliner that’s pictured here, you won’t get to see many places. As ‘cute’ as this van is, it’s just not practical for the roads of the Kimberley. A high clearance off-road van is best, especially for the Gibb River Road.
If you have a 4×4 but you don’t have an off-road caravan, that’s ok, you can hire camping gear from:
- Kimberley Adventure Hire in Kununurra
- Broome Hire Centre in Broome
Where can I store my caravan in Broome?
A few of the smaller Kimberley cruise companies (ones that have their offices in Broome) may offer van storage. Otherwise there’s:

- Broome’s Gateway Caravan Park: 3000 Broome Road, Broome (20 minutes out of Broome). Storage costs the same as booking a camp site. Phone 08 9192 2440 or book online by clicking here.
- Jim Delios’s Broome storage yard: 4 Farrell St. Phone Jim – 0429 990 800. See the Facebook page here.

Where can I store my caravan in Darwin?
- Jenny’s Storage, phone 0418 894 059. This storage is close to the airport and it’s set far back from the main road, so it’s quite private. Jenny’s on-site most of the time and is a delightful character. If you have a pet cat, she may also takes care of it as well (if you ask nicely, in advance). Jenny offers transfers to the airport if you are flying to Broome or Kununurra (once again, ask nicely and in advance).
Thanks for reading. Happy and safe travels to the Kimberley. And be sure to give our family a call to book your Kimberley coastal adventure!
