Cuisine

Cuisine is an important part of cruising the Kimberley, with long days spent exploring, fishing, swimming and having lots of fun. Good nutrition and a balanced diet is key for keeping up energy and sustenance levels in a remote wilderness location. Fresh produce is sourced locally in Broome and Kununurra, and is stored in a large cool room and deep freezers for long periods at sea. The onboard chef will prepare a healthy and vibrant menu that is full of fresh fruit, vegetables, locally sourced meat, freshly caught fish and a range of daily baked breads.

Guests consistently report that the cuisine is one of the highlights of their cruise. All meals are prepared fresh for each guest and is served plated at the dining table. The only buffet served is the early morning continental breakfast that is made available for guests to help themselves before early morning activities.

On a normal day aboard Ocean Dream, guests are served breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, canapé’s, dinner and dessert. Best of all, the chef will prepare all freshly caught fish, mud crabs and oysters for the ultimate in ocean to table dining experience. You can’t get fresher than that!

BYO Alcohol

Ocean Dream includes a complimentary selection of premium beer, wine and sparkling during meal times on Kimberley cruises (Updated 2024 from BYO only). The below-mentioned Beverage Order Form can still be completed for guests with specific additional requests, including spirits and cider.

Ocean Dream operates a BYO alcohol policy. At least 60 days prior to cruise departure, guests are sent a Beverage Order Form for alcoholic beverages that are ordered directly with a local bottle shop in Broome. Ocean Dream Charters will liaise with the bottle shop at no extra charge to the guest, and ensure that all orders are delivered, labelled and stocked in fridges waiting for guest arrival.

6 Night Southern Kimberley Itinerary

Enjoy the highlights and serenity of the Southern Kimberley coastline aboard Ocean Dream on our 6-Night Southern Kimberley Dream Cruise. You’ll visit the well-known treasures of the region including Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef, as well as lesser knowns gems Silica Beach and Ruby Falls. With plentiful opportunities to fish, explore and swim in freshwater billabongs, you can do as much – or as little – as you choose. This cruise includes a seaplane transfer from Broome to Doubtful Bay.

The below itinerary also operates in reverse. Please enquire for that itinerary.

Day 1: Broome, Doubtful Bay

Our courtesy vehicle will pick you up from your Broome accommodation from 7:30am and transfer you to the Broome Airport to prepare for your seaplane flight to Doubtful Bay. Once you’re onboard Ocean Dream and you’ve settled into your stateroom, it’s time to sit back and enjoy a delicious lunch as you get to know your fellow passengers and crew. In the afternoon, you’ll head out in the tenders to spend the afternoon exploring Doubtful Bay, with the opportunity for a beach walk and swim at a beautiful beach.

Day 2: Montgomery Reef

On day two, you’ll explore the fascinating spectacle of Montgomery Reef. Witness as 400 square kilometres of coral reef appears to rise out of the water on the falling tide, creating hundreds of cascading waterfalls as the water rushes off the reef. The reef attracts an abundance of marine life including turtles, manta rays, dugongs, dolphins, crabs and fish. The falling tide also exposes a sand bar where guests are encouraged to have a stroll or take a dip, a good distance away from the mainland. Keep a look out for whales! The protected bays of Lalang-garram Marine Park (Camden Sound) are the ideal location for the thousands of humpback whales who arrive between June and September each year to calve and nurse their young.

Day 3: Sale River, Three Ways, Red Cone Creek

Rise early and head out in the tenders to experience the mangrove forests and set our mud crab nets. Take in the sights and sounds of the Sale River as the crew take you on a scenic tender vessel excursion to Ruby Falls for a refreshing swim in a spring fed waterhole. Back on-board Ocean Dream, it’s time for a leisurely lunch before an afternoon enjoying a soak in the onboard spa or heading out for a fish in the tributaries of Three Ways. In the late afternoon, you’ll cruise to our overnight anchorage location near Raft Point where the magnificent scenery makes for an amazing backdrop to watch the sunset. The chef will prepare any freshly caught mud crabs for a sensational seafood feast.

Day 4: Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls, Kingfisher Islands

Visit the Horizontal Falls, an unusual phenomenon described by naturalist David Attenborough as ‘one of the natural wonders of the world.’ Here you’ll have the option of joining a fast boat ride through the falls (tide dependant) and a tender vessel excursion up Cyclone Creek to view the incredible rock formations of the McLarty Ranges. After a thrilling morning of exploring, it’s back onboard Ocean Dream for lunch as you steam across to the Kingfisher Islands. Enjoy an afternoon of trolling for pelagic fish or take a stroll on a secluded beach. In the evening, you’ll light a bonfire and enjoy refreshments as you watch the sun go down on yet another glorious day.

Day 5: Crocodile Creek, Dugong Bay

This morning you’re off in the tenders for an excursion up Crocodile Creek. Climb above sea level for a freshwater swim in a spring fed waterhole or explore the pool below. Afterwards, you’ll steam around to Dugong Bay to spend some time gathering oysters and for those with the taste for it, eating them fresh off the rocks. Back onboard, enjoy another delicious lunch before you head off in the tenders to explore Dugong Bay. Here, you’ll have another opportunity to flick the lures and hopefully catch a barramundi before heading back to Ocean Dream to prepare for an evening ‘raft up’.

Day 6: Silica Beach, Whirlpool Passage

Silica Beach, a favoured destination located on Hidden Island which forms part of the 800 islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago. Named after the high content of Silica in the sand, the beach is a lovely place to swim and stretch your legs. After a delicious lunch back onboard Ocean Dream, you’ll cruise across to Whirlpool Passage, the divide between Chambers and Hidden Islands. Here, you spend the afternoon in the tenders, moving amongst the whirlpools that form from the tidal peaks and flows as you try your luck at catching an assortment of fish species to be enjoyed for an evening meal.

Day 7: Cygnet Bay, Broome

Enjoy a final breakfast and say your goodbyes to the crew before you depart Ocean Dream by tender and step back on land at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. Learn the fascinating history of pearling as you are guided through their fully operational pearl farm on a one-hour tour. Take in your final view of the bright orange sand and stunning blue water in the bays of the region over a delicious Barramundi lunch before departing by coach back to your Broome accommodation. Ocean Dream Charters recommends staying overnight in Broome, in case of any unforeseen delays.

It is little wonder the King George River is a highlight for guests and a favourite destination for keen photographers.

Day 4: Glycosmis Falls and Barra Falls

Located near Cape Londonderry, today we experience two unique and impressive falls of the North Kimberley. Glycosmis Falls, complete with two thundering streams of water pouring off the cliff face into the sea is well worth a visit. If time permits and tides are right, we can explore the area for Bradshaw Art. Barra Falls, equally as impressive and only accessible by helicopter or smaller vessels, is a stunning location for a hike and freshwater swim.

Day 5: Banjal (Vansittart Bay)

Join a tender vessel excursion to Jar Island to view some fascinating Gwion Gwion Art. Often referred to as Bradshaw Art, Gwion Gwion was first discovered in 1891 by explorer Joseph Bradshaw who became the first European to record these unusual paintings.
