“What is the best time to cruise the Kimberley?”

Ask us, we live here! But, in answer to your question, the best time to cruise the Kimberley coast is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. This period offers the most favourable conditions for exploring the region’s breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and natural wonders like waterfalls, gorges, and tidal phenomena. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons of the Kimberley:

Early Dry Season (March – May)

  • Highlights: Waterfalls such as the King George Falls and Mitchell Falls are at their most spectacular, fed by the heavy rains of the preceding wet season. Note that in March they’re usually gushing – depending, of course, on recent rainfall. During the early dry season period, vegetation is lush, and wildlife is abundant. Weather: Warm but comfortable, with daytime temperatures averaging around 30°C (86°F) and cooler evenings. Experience: Perfect for photographers and nature enthusiasts eager to see the Kimberley at its greenest.

Mid Dry Season (June – August)

  • Highlights: Cooler temperatures make this a peak travel period. Plummeting temperatures in southern parts of Australia also cause residents down south to look northward for a winter escape, with plenty of people coming up from spots like Perth and Melbourne over these mid-season months. Wildlife, including saltwater crocodiles and various bird species, is more easily spotted as water sources shrink. Weather: Mild and dry, with daytime temperatures around 26-28°C (79-82°F). Experience: Ideal for those seeking a comfortable climate for outdoor activities and exploration. These are our most popular months for Kimberley cruise bookings.

Late Dry Season (September – October)

  • Highlights: The water levels are lower, revealing dramatic geological features like sandstone cliffs and tidal flats. Whale watching is a key attraction during this period, with thousands of humpback whales migrating along the coast. Weather: Hotter, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F). Experience: Excellent for those interested in fishing, marine life and dramatic tidal phenomena like the Horizontal Falls.

Overall, June to August is the most popular time due to the milder temperatures, but the early dry season (March-May) offers unparalleled waterfalls and lush scenery. Consider your interests and tolerance for heat when choosing your Kimberley cruise timing! And remember, we’re local and we’re always happy to answer your questions 🙂
