Tranquil Bay
Tucked along the rugged Kimberley coastline, Tranquil Bay lives up to its name. This secluded inlet is a haven of calm waters, pristine beaches, and dramatic cliffs, making it one of the most peaceful spots along the Kimberley cruise route.
Tranquil Bay is a sanctuary for wildlife and a perfect spot for nature lovers. The calm waters are home to an array of marine life including tropical fish, sea turtles, and the occasional dolphin. On land, the surrounding cliffs and beaches attract nesting seabirds, while the tidal flats and mangroves provide habitats for crocodiles and other wildlife.
Visitors can explore hidden coves, tidal pools, and sheltered lagoons, making it an ideal destination for photography, birdwatching, or simply soaking in the pristine environment.
Scenic Highlights
One of the bay’s standout features is the Koolama wreck, a historical site resting on the sands after the vessel was beached during World War II. On 20 February 1942, the MV Koolama came under enemy attack and was forced to seek refuge in Rulhieres Bay to undergo emergency repairs. From nearby Pangali Cove, located on the bay’s western edge, a rescue team led passengers on a difficult overland journey to the Kalumburu (Pago) Catholic Mission. With the skilled assistance of Aboriginal guides, everyone made it to safety. In later years, Rulhieres Bay was renamed Koolama Bay in honour of the ship and its remarkable story of endurance.
Beyond history, the bay’s calm waters are perfect for exploring. The scenery here is quintessential Kimberley: towering red cliffs, secluded beaches, and turquoise waters.
