True North II

For 30 years, TRUE NORTH’s team have led the way in small group expeditions of the Kimberley coast. The convenience of these small groups allows your crew the opportunity to cater for personal preferences and specific interests such as fishing, birdwatching and photography excursions.

TRUE NORTH II features an intimate experience with just 22 guests and a combined saloon/lounge. The dining salon features a stunning ‘boardroom’ setting and the revered True North dining experience. There is also a sundeck, outdoor bar deck and a dedicated sports deck.

TRUE NORTH II is purpose-built to explore coastal areas including the upper reaches of shallow river systems – guests need only step out of their cabins to experience wilderness. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! Multiple adventure boats provide guests with a greater opportunity to do “what they want, when they want” and, to add yet another dimension to adventure, most itineraries feature an onboard helicopter.

Dedicated adventure boats

The TRUE NORTH II operates with dedicated adventure boats. Our adventure boats are 20’ runabouts. We have deliberately chosen this configuration to provide greater comfort, practicality and safety. These boats feature ample seating and when the boat is not under way, it is possible to stand-up and walk around.

Helicopter

When helicopter excursions are offered – the helicopter generally remains on the TRUE NORTH for the duration of the cruise. This allows helicopter activities to be scheduled for most days of the itinerary and, for personalised excursions such as sunrise and sunset flights.

Please note – helicopter flights are an additional extra and are not included in the cruise price unless they are part of a transfer at the beginning or end of the cruise.

Wow – who would have thought, I have never been in a helicopter before, now I can’t get enough. I can’t speak highly enough about the whole operation. I felt completely safe and I could not have hoped to have seen all that I saw if we didn’t have a helicopter onboard.

Cuisine

Modern Australian cuisine

The TRUE NORTH II offers sustainable, organic and very Australian cuisine. Our menus are also destination inspired and feature the very best of locally sourced ingredients. Modern technique is used to showcase alongside more traditional methods.

The galley delivers continuously evolving dishes drawing from an array of different cuisines to ensure that each dining experience is unique to every itinerary.

Fish with the chef

It’s not very often that you find an opportunity to accompany your chef as he or she hand-picks the evening’s fare. It’s even more-unique to stand side by side as you negotiate with an un-negotiable mud crab, or an aerial barramundi or a marauding mackerel. Hear their stories, witness skill beyond the galley and, make your own contribution to the menu. Land the catch of the day and then stay alongside as the chef demonstrates the processes involved – from the sea to your plate, a dining experience that practices what TRUE NORTH preaches – sustainable, organic and very Australian.

And the food style is to “let the fish do the talking” – only highlighting with ingredients that accentuate the natural sweetness and flavours of the fillet. Perhaps for lunch – seared barramundi, Broome mango & mud crab millet, roasted macadamias and mint salad.

Savour the flavours

Take a seat next to a fellow-adventurer as the last of day’s light dances on a horizon never obscured. Invitation is extended by hand-crafted marri and immaculate settings whilst in the galley the chefs ready to plate what they started to prepare no less than 72 hours previous.

They have brined shoulders of lamb, cooked sous-vide with goose fat and herbs, slowly roasted and then chilled, pressed and portioned ready to serve.

Confit garlic and thyme roasted lamb rumps sliced medium-rare, resting on wild mushroom potato puree and sticky lamb jus. With peppery watercress, yellow bean and hazelnut salad to finish.

Later, double-skin glasses are placed before one and all – topped with a disc of tempered white chocolate and five dots of burnt raspberry coulis. A drizzle of warm Kimberley honey then reveals cold-pressed seasonal nectarines and vanilla bean from Papua New Guinea.

All cabins feature ensuite or private facilities with in-house entertainment and satellite telephones. Please note: Cabins are allocated on booking, but are only confirmed 30 days prior to travel. Room requests are not guaranteed, but you can certainly request a preferred cabin at time of booking.

Awaken to the majestic Kimberley and savour an irresistible TRUE NORTH II breakfast as we glide past Cockatoo and Koolan Islands – our attentive crew will be happy to introduce the colourful histories of both! Then it’s time to ‘personally’ introduce you to a Kimberley icon – The Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience! Take a refreshing swim and a walk on the squeaky white sands of Silica Beach. Before you know it, your first day onboard will be coming to an end – but there’s still time to select a fine wine and to enjoy a leisurely evening meal as we set sail to Doubtful Bay.

DAY 2: Sale River

This morning is devoted to exploring the Sale River. Join naturalists and adventurers alike as we ‘ride the tide’ on a classic river expedition! For those who can’t wait one minute longer, the mouth of the Sale offers the first opportunity to ‘land a barra’! or, take off on a heli-fishing adventure perhaps to where the salt meets the fresh! Enjoy lunch as we weigh anchor and cruise to another Kimberley icon – Montgomery reef! Montgomery is a unique ecosystem that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world! Turtles, dugong, crocodiles and every imaginable sea creature abound and the helicopter puts all in perspective!

DAY 3: Prince Regent

The scenery will astound and there are some not-to-be-missed fi shing spots as the TRUE NORTH II graces the majestic Prince Regent River. This morning’s target species include delectable mangrove jack and fingermark bream. At King Cascade we will manoeuvre the TRUE NORTH II right under the falls. Then it’s time for more ‘adventure in the tender’ – a chance to stretch the laces on your hiking boots and an opportunity to swim in yet another picture perfect billabong, or perhaps you’d like to venture further upriver to visit the spectacular ‘Amphitheatre’ waterfall. The helicopter will be popular again when the first group of intrepid explorers returns from Jurassic Park!

DAY 4: Picnic time

Be amongst the first on deck and join an early morning fishing expedition, or see some stunning rock art or join the ship’s naturalist in one of the adventure boats – and all before another breathtaking helicopter flight to a picnic that you’ll never forget! The TRUE NORTH II’s mouthwatering cuisine alongside a crystal clear billabong – in one of the most remote places on earth!

DAY 5: The Hunter

Wake this morning in the magnificent Hunter River. The Hunter is about as far away as you can get in Australia – a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests and surrounded by rainforest encrusted mountains. And, the Hunter has it all – fishing, mud-crabbing, bird-watching and simply exploring “where few have been before!” Join one of our adventure boats for a closer look, it’s only a short hike, enjoy a challenging hike to Jackson Falls and, there’s even more splendour from the helicopter! In the afternoon we will sail into Prince Frederick harbour and enjoy sunset drinks on picturesque Crystal Beach, enjoy some delicious hors d’oeuvres and watch the sun descend on another action packed day in the Kimberley!

DAY 6: Swift Bay

Wake in the stunning turquoise waters of Swift Bay. No time to dally – after an early breakfast it’s time to join the ‘hunt for the black-lip oyster’.
