The Kimberley
When To Cruise
Kimberley Seasons
Most people think that the Kimberley has 2 seasons – ‘The Wet’ and ‘The Dry’. As locals, we recognise a 3rd season being ‘The Build Up’. What you want to see and do will determine which month is best for you. For local advice, we’re only an email or phone call away.
“Ask Us, We Live Here!”
The Wet Season (Dec-Mar)
Temperatures heat up, the tourists disappear and (depending on if it’s a good Wet Season) the waterfalls and swimming holes all get topped up. At the tail end of the Wet Season, the months of March and April are hot and humid, but are the prime time for waterfalls. The Kimberley receives 90% of its annual rainfall over the Wet Season, revitalising the landscape and cleaning out stagnant swimming holes.
Bruce says: If you can brave the heat and humidity, March and April are the best months for waterfalls. Barra fishing is great, too. Here in Kununurra, we love watching the countryside turn green and seeing lots of wildlife moving around.
The Dry Season (Apr-Aug)
After April, temperatures begin to cool down and there’s little chance of rain. For folks living in the southern parts of Australia, the mid-winter months of June and July are a popular time to escape the winter blues and enjoy the Kimberley’s never-ending sunshine.
The Kimberley is an important breeding ground for humpback whales and they can be seen along the coastline between July and October. This is a really special time to cruise the Kimberley!
Louise says: The majority of the emails that I receive here at the Kimberley Cruise Centre are for trips departing between May and September. If you can time your trip around a full moon, you’ll see tidal phenomena such as the Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef at their best.
The Build-Up (Sept-Dec)
The days heat up, the waterfalls dry up, and there’s not a drop of rain in sight. The ‘Build Up’ months of September to December are loved by locals for the excellent Barra fishing and fewer people around. Airlines and hotels often offer great deals during this time. For divers and snorkellers, October and November is the time to jump on a boat and head out to the Rowley Shoals for out-of-this-world diving.
Terri says: If you don’t mind the heat and humidity, these months are great for Barra fishing and there are fewer people around. Humpback whales can often be seen until October, too.
