Wyndham

Wyndham is the Kimberley’s oldest settlement and the northernmost town in Western Australia, located at the very end of the Great Northern Highway, 110km from Kununurra. Popular sights include The Bastion (Five Rivers lookout), which rises 335-metres above sea level and offers offers astounding views over the five rivers that run into the Cambridge Gulf (the King, Pentecost, Durack, Ord and Forrest rivers); the 18m-long Big Croc statue at the entrance of town; the unique Afghan Cemetery, where Afghan cameleers were buried with their camels; and The Grotto, a massive amphitheatre gorge and bottomless waterhole near Wyndham.

W.A’s northernmost town

Perched on the eastern edge of King Sound, Wyndham is the northernmost town in Western Australia. Wyndham combines rich history, stunning landscapes, and the beginning or end port for Kimberley cruise vessels travelling the whole coastline between Broome and Wyndham. From Wyndham, it’s a 1.5 hour drive to Kununurra along a sealed road.

A Town with Stories
Established in the late 1800s during the gold rush, Wyndham quickly became a vital port for trade, pearling, and pastoral life. Visitors can step back in time at the Wyndham Museum, where the region’s Indigenous heritage, colonial history, and stories of early settlers come alive. Strolling the wharf or spotting the remnants of the old railway gives a sense of a town that has long been a hub for exploration and adventure.

Nature on Your Doorstep
Just offshore, King Sound boasts Australia’s largest tidal range, with waters rising more than 11 metres between high and low tide. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot crocodiles, dolphins, and a vast array of birdlife. From Wyndham, you’re just a short journey from the Kimberley’s most iconic rivers and waterfalls, including the King George Falls and the Berkeley River.

Planning Your Visit
The best time to visit Wyndham is during the dry season, from April to September, when rivers are navigable, and the weather is perfect for cruising and exploring. The town offers cafes, and essential services, though Kununurra is the best place to find accommodation.
