Kimberley Quest II

For over 25 years, Kimberley Quest’s team have been exploring the Kimberley coast, and the Kimberley Cruise Centre’s Director, Bruce, was on one of their very first cruises (on their original cruise vessel). All these years later, and Kimberley Quest still offers one of the Kimberley’s best small ship cruises.

The Kimberley Quest II is a 25-metre fully air-conditioned expedition vessel equipped with helipad. Custom built for the remote Kimberley coastal region, it accommodates a maximum of 18 passengers in a range of twin or double cabins, each with private ensuite.

Dedicated adventure boats

The Kimberley Quest II carries three excursion tenders and a shaded fast boat, so days are filled with a myriad of activities both on and off land, exploring the spectacular region with your very own local guide, who has extensive knowledge of the Kimberley coastline.

Enjoy comfortable shore expeditions in the Kimberley Quest’s fast boat ‘Quest Express’, with 2 x 440 HP Yanmars with a top speed of 40 knots and a canopy to shade from the Kimberley sun.

Cuisine

Cuisine on board Kimberley Quest II is simply delicious. All meals are prepared by our talented chef in the fully equipped gourmet galley, offering an array of fresh fish, seafood, the highest quality meats, freshly baked breads and some of the best local produce.

The menu is designed with variety in mind and you can expect a minimum of three meals each day with tasty treats and snacks in between meals. When our guests catch fresh fish, oysters or crabs, you can expect to see them on the menu!

With both indoor and outdoor dining areas, you can relax while enjoying the amazing cuisine and the ever-changing backdrop. The air conditioned indoor dining area offers a large open dining/lounge space and is an excellent location to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal with views through our full length windows, whilst the outdoor dining area offers a relaxed environment complete with a soft ocean breeze.

We cater for all dietary requirements and special needs. We have endless fresh drinking water, tea, coffee and an espresso machine available 24 hours a day.

Kimberley Quest II is a fully licenced vessel and beverages can be pre-ordered prior to your departures. BYO is also an option.

All of our air-conditioned cabins come with their own ensuite and and personal mini-fridge, offering you all the comfort you need while you explore this magnificent remote wilderness. Please note: You can request to have a particular cabin number. Cabins are allocated on booking, but only confirmed 30 days prior to travel. Room Request allocations are not guaranteed.

FLYBRIDGE CABIN

Flybridge Cabin

Our exclusive flybridge cabin is the only guest cabin on the top deck and features a queen size bed, well appointed private ensuite with hair dryer, individual air-conditioning and a personal mini-fridge. With a large window in the bedroom and a port hole in the ensuite you will never miss a moment of the magnificent Kimberley scenery. Storage consists of a closet with hanging facilities, cupboard and space underneath your bed. Note: The queen size bed in this cabin is accessible from both sides.

SUPERIOR CABIN

Superior Cabin

Our superior cabins are located on the main deck and feature a queen size bed, well appointed private ensuite with hair dryer, individual air-conditioning, personal mini-fridges and large viewing windows. A closet with hanging facilities, cupboard and storage underneath your bed is also in your cabin.

Double Cabin

The double cabins are located on the lower deck and feature a double size bed with an additional single bed above, well appointed private ensuite with hair dryer, individual air-conditioning, personal mini-fridges and viewing windows.

For guests who would like stay in our double cabins and would prefer separate bedding we have one double bed which can be split into two single beds.

Storage consists of a closet with hanging facilities, cupboard and space underneath your bed.

Deckplan

Top Deck

One of the most breathtaking and spectacular viewing points is on the sundeck which is located at the bow of the vessel on the top deck. This spacious, outdoor area is great for reading a book on the sun lounges, relaxing in our spa or enjoying that first glimpse of the majestic Kimberley sunsets.

Located behind the wheelhouse is an outdoor, shaded alfresco area. A great place look out to the Kimberley landscape as you’re cruising, this is also the only designated smoking area on the vessel.

If you want to make contact with family or get in touch with work our satellite phone and facsimile facilities are located in the wheelhouse; our crew will be able to assist with any guest requiring the use of these facilities.

Above the top deck we have a helipad for transfers and optional scenic heli flights.

Main Deck

A large dining table is located in the outdoor entertaining area. This is a great place for dining, reading, watching the world go by, chatting with newly formed friends over a coffee or wine whilst enjoying some of the Chef’s delectable treats or simply relaxing as the soft breeze takes you into Kimberley dreamtime . . .

The air-conditioned saloon offers a large open dining/lounge area and is an excellent location to sit down and enjoy a delicious meal while looking out our full length viewing windows.

For those who like to keep a detailed itinerary of where you are, you will love our navigational viewing system which displays the route that you are cruising. The lounge/dining is fully equipped with the latest modern facilities including a plasma television, DVD and CD player and a Bose surround sound stereo system.

A selection of music, movies and documentaries and board games are available for your enjoyment in the lounge/dining area. Our crew are happy to display your photographs on the plasma television allowing you to view the day’s highlights.

Lower Deck

The central stairway on the main deck leads down to the cabins on the lower deck. On our lower deck you will find four double bed cabins.

We may need to vary itineraries from time to time, however, regardless of the tides we always visit the spectacular icons of this region. Taste of the Kimberley

The ‘Taste of the Kimberley’ will have you touring a fully operational Australian South Sea Pearl farm, cruising through the thousand islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago and visiting icons including the famous Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef, Australia’s largest inshore reef. You will also have the opportunity to try your luck at fishing in the pristine Kimberley waters. Exploring this region aboard the well-appointed Kimberley Quest II, will leave you with the taste for more.

DAY 1: BROOME – CYGNET BAY

Your Quest begins with a transfer to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm located on the Dampier Peninsular. On your arrival, you will be transferred to the Kimberley Quest II, where you will be welcomed aboard by your captain and crew. Enjoy lunch whilst crossing King Sound, cruising through the thousand islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago; this is your first taste of the Kimberley. Cool off with a refreshing swim in one of many Kimberley freshwater pools, followed by a scenic tender excursion. This evening you can witness one of the spectacular Kimberley sunsets.

DAY 2: TALBOT BAY, DUGONG BAY & KINGFISHER ISLANDS

This morning will find us exploring Talbot Bay, home to one of the icons of the Kimberley coast; the spectacular Horizontal Falls. Take an exhilarating ride through this natural phenomenon and wonder at the amazing rock formations of Cyclone Creek. In and around Dugong Bay, we take a scenic tender excursion and cool off with a refreshing swim in one of the freshwater pools. Later in the day you will have your first taste of fishing for Giant Trevally, Mackerel, Tuna and Queenfish at the Kingfisher Islands.

DAY 3: MONTGOMERY REEF, STRICKLAND BAY

This morning, we cruise towards the amazing Montgomery Reef, which covers more than 300km2, making it Australia’s largest inshore reef. Watch as the tide falls right before your eyes, creating a spectacular waterfall effect. Take a tender ride to view many marine species, including turtles and sea birds. Later we explore Strickland Bay visiting old pearlers graves and joining our guides in search of Threadfin Salmon and other species. Before unwinding on the sun deck capturing one last sunset aboard Kimberley Quest II.

DAY 4 : CYGNET BAY – BROOME

Today, after one last breakfast, we disembark Kimberley Quest II. Followed by a Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm tour, offering you a rare glimpse into the life of an operational pearl farm. This experience will leave you with a deeper understanding of what makes this place unique! Here we wave goodbye with a transfer back to Broome. On arrival you will be transferred to your chosen accommodation.

Kimberley Fishing Expeditions

Offering some of the best fishing in the world, spectacular scenery and perfect weather the Kimberley is undoubtedly a very special place. Isolated and remote, this true wilderness country encompasses rugged gorges, towering sandstone escarpments, meandering river systems and immense estuaries. The waters are teeming with many species of fish including Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark Bream, Salmon, Giant Trevally and more. We take a maximum of 12 guests on our fishing expeditions to ensure that there is plenty of space in our tenders which are driven by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide who will use their experience to help you land the ‘big ones’

DAY 1: DEPART BROOME

A courtesy vehicle will pick you up from your accommodation in Broome at approximately 8.00am and transfer you to the Broome airport for a light aircraft flight to join Kimberley Quest II at Cygnet Bay. Your fishing expedition has begun!

DAY 2: SECURE BAY

Watch the incredible tidal movements throughout Secure Bay as we cruise through many spectacular whirlpools in search for barramundi. We then head towards the outer islands for your first taste of fishing for Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel and other pelagic species.

DAY 3: COLLIER BAY / WALCOTT INLET

Another action packed day filled with barramundi fishing! An array of snags, run-offs and rock bars present ideal conditions for big barra and a host of other species which will be lurking in these waters. See if you can join the metre club!

DAY 4: DOUBTFUL BAY

Fish the numerous inlets of Doubtful Bay for the elusive barramundi and Threadfin Salmon. Enjoy a cruise to Red Cone Creek for a refreshing swim at Ruby Falls before trying your luck at mud crabbing.

DAY 5 & 6: GEORGE WATER & GLENELG RIVER

We fish the immense estuaries and extensive river systems of the George Water and the Glenelg River, both of which have reputations for ‘Big barra’. These two systems are also home to many species of estuary fish including Mangrove Jack, Fingermark and the prized barramundi. No moment is spared without a line in the water! Fish the outgoing tide or try your luck at the numerous creeks, it is serious fishing in these waters!

DAY 7: CYGNET BAY – BROOME

After a late breakfast you will disembark the Kimberley Quest II for your light aircraft flight back to Broome. Arrival into Broome will be around midday.

Please note:

All of our specialist Kimberley fishing expeditions are scheduled specifically around the tides to give you maximum fishing time and idyllic conditions. We take a maximum of 12 fishermen to ensure that there is ample space in our four custom-built 5m excursion tenders, all equipped with depth sounders and four-stroke 90HP Honda outboards.

All fishing excursions are accompanied by one of our experienced Kimberley fishing guides. We provide a large range of specialist rods and reels, as well as an extensive array of lures. Gear is provided, however you are of course welcome to bring your favourite lures and your own rod and reel.

Heli fishing is available at an additional cost. Note this is to be arranged with the office prior to departure.

Southern Kimberley Quest

Many icons of the Kimberley can be found in the stunning southern region including the Horizontal Falls, Montgomery Reef and King Cascade. This area is also prolific with islands, whirlpools, inlets and pockets of rainforest, home to many species of birds and other wildlife. You will enjoy a helicopter flight over the Mitchell Falls, as well as exploring a land of extraordinary contrast and colour, rich in history, ancient Aboriginal rock art and breathtaking scenery.

DAY 1: BROOME – CAPE LEVEQUE

Your Southern Quest begins when a courtesy vehicle picks you up from your accommodation at approximately 4.00pm and transfers you to the Kimberley Quest II, where you will be welcomed on board by your captain and crew. Enjoy a relaxing drink as you watch the sun dip below the horizon, while cruising past the famous Cable Beach.

DAY 2: BUCCANEER ARCHIPELAGO

This morning will find us crossing the vast King Sound, cruising through the thousands of islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago. Take a tender excursion for a spot of exploration, and have a go at fishing before unwinding on the sundeck to take in the beautiful scenery.

DAY 3: DUGONG BAY, TALBOT BAY, HORIZONTAL FALLS

Today we take a scenic tender excursion in and around Dugong Bay and cool off with a refreshing swim in one of the freshwater pools. Around the corner lies Talbot Bay, home to one of the icons of the Kimberley coast, the spectacular Horizontal Falls. Take a tender and head in for an up-close and exhilarating ride through this natural phenomenon. In the afternoon take a scenic excursion up Cyclone Creek to marvel at the amazing rock formations.

DAY 4: COLLIER BAY, MONTGOMERY REEF, RED CONE CREEK

Early morning we take you fishing in Collier Bay; a chance to catch the elusive Barramundi! We then cruise to the amazing Montgomery Reef, which covers more than 300km², making it Australia’s largest inshore reef. Watch as the tide falls right before your eyes, creating a spectacular waterfall effect. Take a tender ride to view many marine species, including turtles and sea birds. Enjoy an afternoon cruise past Raft Point and Steep Island to Red Cone Creek for a refreshing swim at Ruby Falls or try your luck at mud crabbing.

DAY 5: KURI BAY, CAMDEN HARBOUR

Relax on board as we cruise past Augustus Island and the remote pearling settlement of Kuri Bay. At nearby Camden Harbour, we visit the forlorn settler’s graves on Sheep Island and soak up the history of the first European settlement in the 1860s. In the afternoon take a tender excursion for a spot of exploration. Have a go at fishing or collect rock oysters, before unwinding on the sundeck to take in the magnificence of this region.

DAY 6: PRINCE REGENT RIVER, KING CASCADE

Early morning we cruise through St George Basin, a stunning inland sea. Leaving the vista of mighty Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo, we cruise up the Prince Regent River, marvelling at the pristine waterway that cuts through sandstone cliffs and gorges. Arriving at King Cascade, which is spring fed, marvel at the rush of water cascading in breathtaking tiers, surrounded by lush ferns and a myriad of wildlife. Climb above the falls for an unforgettable swim in a massive crystal clear pool. Be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the magnificent Prince Regent River in the distance – wilderness adventuring at its best! Late afternoon join our guides for an excursion to Cathedral Falls, while spotting crocodiles and flying foxes. Alternatively fish the Prince Regent River renowned for big Barra and Threadfin Salmon.

DAY 7: CAREENING BAY, ROE RIVER

Today we visit Careening Bay, site of an ancient boab tree first visited in 1820 by Phillip Parker King while on hydrographic survey off the Australian coastline. We then cruise up the Roe River witnessing one of the highest crocodile populations in the Kimberley! Relax on board while we cross Prince Frederick Harbour to visit a Wandjina art site before heading towards the Hunter River for another spectacular sunset as the sun sinks below the Kimberley horizon.

DAY 8: HUNTER RIVER – BROOME

In the morning we explore the spectacular Hunter River, one of the most scenic rivers for a relaxing ride in the tenders as we spot ancient rock art, crocodiles and flying foxes, taking in the flora and fauna of the Kimberley for the last time. Depart the Kimberley Quest II by helicopter where you will enjoy a scenic flight over the Mitchell Falls. At the Mitchell Plateau airstrip you will board a light aircraft and discover the immensity of the Kimberley. Return to Broome by sunset, where our team will transfer you to your accommodation or airport.

HUNTER RIVER – BROOME (FLY – CRUISE)

DAY 1: BROOME – HUNTER RIVER

Your Southern Quest begins in the morning when you depart for a scenic flight up the Kimberley coast to the Mitchell Plateau. Board a helicopter and enjoy an unforgettable flight over the spectacular Mitchell Falls before landing on the helipad of the Kimberley Quest II, followed by a buffet lunch at anchor. Late afternoon take a scenic tender excursion to view the amazing high red escarpments and wildlife which make the Hunter River so special.

DAY 2: CAREENING BAY, PRINCE REGENT RIVER, CAMP CREEK

This morning we visit Careening Bay, site of an ancient carved boab tree first visited in 1820 by Phillip Parker King while on a hydrographic survey off the Australian coastline. We then cruise through St George Basin, a stunning inland sea. Leaving the vista of mighty Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo, we cruise up the Prince Regent River, marvelling at the pristine waterway that cuts through sandstone cliffs and gorges. Take an excursion to Camp Creek, a beautiful waterway lined with weeping paperbarks where you can enjoy a walk to the top of the falls for a refreshing swim.

DAY 3: PRINCE REGENT RIVER, KING CASCADE, CATHEDRAL GORGE

DAY 4: CAMDEN HARBOUR, KURI BAY

At nearby Camden Harbour, we visit forlorn settlers’ graves on Sheep Island and soak up the history of the early European settlement. Take one of the tenders for a spot of exploration, have a go at fishing or collect rock oysters. Alternatively relax on the sundeck to take in the beautiful scenery. We then cruise between Augustus Island and the mainland, passing the remote pearling settlement of Kuri Bay.

DAY 5: RAFT POINT, SALE RIVER, DOUBTFUL BAY

This morning we cruise to Steep Island and anchor below Raft Point, as we prepare to walk to the caves perched on the hill, where some of the finest well-preserved Wandjina art in the Kimberley can be found. From the top we have an amazing view of the Kimberley coast. We then explore the Sale River and take an excursion upstream for a dip in the spring-fed rainforest pools and on the journey home view ancient rock art from the tenders. As the sun begins to set, we fish the inlets of Doubtful Bay for the elusive Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon.

DAY 6: RED CONE CREEK, MONTGOMERY REEF, COLLIER BAY

Take a tender excursion to Red Cone Creek for a refreshing swim at Ruby Falls, or join our guides to try your luck at mud crabbing. We then cruise to the amazing Montgomery Reef, which covers more than 300km2, making it Australia’s largest inshore reef. Watch as the tide falls right before your eyes, creating a waterfall effect as the reef rises out of the water. Then take a ride in the tenders to observe many marine species, including turtles and sea birds. Late afternoon try your luck at Barramundi fishing in Collier Bay or alternatively relax on board and take in the beautiful scenery.

Cruise to Talbot Bay, home to one of the icons of the Kimberley coast, the spectacular Horizontal Falls. In and around Dugong Bay, we take a scenic tender excursion and cool off with a refreshing swim in the freshwater pools. Marvel at the antics of infant whales as we cruise through the Humpback breeding sanctuary of Camden Sound.

DAY 6: CAMDEN HARBOUR, ROTHSAY WATER

Early morning we take you pelagic fishing or join our guides in search of Kimberley rock oysters. Afterwards visit Camden Harbour, scene of a 19th-century sheep farming fiasco by early European settlers. In this rugged setting and harsh climate, the settlement failed miserably and was abandoned after less than two years. Mid-afternoon we cruise towards Rothsay Water to take a tender excursion exploring ancient Bradshaw and Wandjina art.

DAY 7: CAREENING BAY, BIGGE ISLAND

Visit Careening Bay, site of an ancient carved boab tree first visited in 1820 by Phillip Parker King while on a hydrographic survey of the Australian coastline. Next we cruise north to Bigge Island, one of the largest sandstone islands and home to amazing Bradshaw art and Wandjina art with a maritime theme. As we continue our journey, witness the rugged terrain and ancient weathered rocks from the vessel while cruising towards the Mitchell River.

DAY 8: MITCHELL RIVER, SURVEYORS CREEK

We are now entering the incredible assortment of islands that form the Bonaparte Archipelago. Cruise to the Mitchell River, source of the magnificent Mitchell Falls, where you can charter a helicopter and take an exhilarating ride over the falls themselves. Drop a lure in later and perfect your fishing skills in these rich waters or go crocodile spotting. Late afternoon enjoy a swim in the cool tranquil waters of Surveyors Creek.

DAY 9: VANSITTART BAY, WWII DC3 CRASH SITE

Today we explore various coves within Vansittart Bay, visiting sites rich in the fascinating Bradshaw or Gwion Gwion art, named after Joseph Bradshaw, who in 1891 became the first European to record these amazing paintings. Some Bradshaw art, which is unique to the Kimberley, has been dated at over 17,000 years old. There is also the opportunity to visit the crash site of a DC3 aircraft, located on the eastern side of Vansittart Bay.

DAY 10: DRYSDALE RIVER

Today we encounter one of the longest rivers in the Kimberley (432km), the Drysdale. Spend the day exploring the spectacular palm- studded landscape and the rapids of the Drysdale area. Join our guides on a scenic tender excursion to witness crocodiles, flying foxes and many species of bird life which thrive in these delta islands. Then enjoy a swim in secluded rock pools. Late afternoon walk on a deserted beach or try to catch a Barramundi, with many great ‘snags’ to fish around.

DAY 11: GLYCOSMIS FALLS, PANGALI COVE, KOOLAMA BAY

Early morning we cruise around Cape Londonderry, the most northerly point of Western Australia. We then visit Glycosmis Falls to view a unbelievable Kimberley waterfall before witnessing the survivors’ camp at Pangali Cove where you can enjoy a freshwater dip beneath a waterfall. In the afternoon we visit Koolama Bay, where the vessel Koolama was beached in February 1942, following an attack by the Japanese in World War II. The passengers were taken ashore by order of the ship’s master and many had to walk overland on an epic cross-country trek.

DAY 12: KING GEORGE RIVER

At high tide, we cross the sandbars of the King George River for a breathtaking cruise along this majestic cathedral-like gorge. This incredible scenery unfolds as we approach the King George Falls, a dual waterfall that has an uninterrupted vertical drop of over 80m, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia. The Kimberley Quest II is able to cruise to the base of the twin falls for a refreshing ‘shower’, Kimberley-style! For those intrepid adventurers, you may climb to the top for a breathtaking vista of the river below, a truly humbling experience as you appreciate the immensity of this untamed landscape, followed by a refreshing dip. Overnight we anchor just metres away from the falls, with tranquil sounds and an extraordinary view from the bow.

DAY 13: BERKELEY RIVER, CAMBRIDGE GULF

Early morning we cruise up the Berkeley River, taking in the numerous waterfalls and ancient sandstone escarpments. Take an excursion with our guides to go crocodile-spotting and bird watching or try your luck at fishing. Marvel at the Amphitheatre Falls and then cool off in beautiful freshwater pools. Late afternoon we take a tender excursion up to the back of the Berkeley River, where the salt water meets the fresh water. Fish off the flat rocks for Barramundi which are lurking in the rapids, or alternatively walk to a freshwater pool to enjoy a relaxing dip. Savour your last evening under the Kimberley skies as we cruise towards Cambridge Gulf, journeying through the night towards the townsite of Wyndham.

DAY 14: WYNDHAM PORT, KUNUNURRA

DAY 1: KUNUNURRA – WYNDHAM PORT

Early morning we cruise up the Berkeley River, taking in the numerous waterfalls and ancient sandstone escarpments. Experience your first taste of fishing for Barramundi or take a tender excursion with our guides to go crocodile-spotting and bird watching. Marvel at the Amphitheatre Falls and then cool off in beautiful freshwater pools. Late afternoon we take a tender excursion up to the back of the Berkeley River, where the salt water meets the fresh water. Fish off the flat rocks for Barra which are lurking in the rapids, or alternatively walk to a freshwater pool to enjoy a relaxing dip. Tonight we savour the surroundings, anchoring near a secluded waterfall.

At high tide, we cross the sandbars of the King George River for a breathtaking cruise along this majestic cathedral-like gorge. This incredible scenery unfolds as we approach the King George Falls, a dual waterfall that has an uninterrupted vertical drop of over 80m, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia. The Kimberley Quest II is able to cruise to the base of the twin falls for a refreshing ‘shower’, Kimberley-style! The passengers were taken ashore by order of the ship’s master and many had to walk overland on an epic cross-country trek. We then visit the survivors’ camp at Pangali Cove and enjoy a freshwater dip beneath a waterfall. In the afternoon we visit Glycosmis Falls to view another unbelievable Kimberley waterfall and then cruise around Cape Londonderry, the most northerly point of Western Australia.

DAY 5: DRYSDALE RIVER

Today we encounter one of the longest rivers in the Kimberley (432km), the Drysdale. Spend the day exploring the spectacular palm-studded landscape and the rapids of the Drysdale area. Join our guides on a scenic tender excursion to witness crocodiles, flying foxes and many species of bird life which thrive in these delta islands. Then enjoy a swim in secluded rock pools. Late afternoon walk on a deserted beach or try to catch a Barramundi, with many great ‘snags’ to fish around.

DAY 6: VANSITTART BAY, WWII DC3 CRASH SITE

Today we explore various coves within Vansittart Bay, visiting sites rich in the fascinating Bradshaw or Gwion Gwion art, named after Joseph Bradshaw, who in 1891 became the first European to record these amazing paintings. Some Bradshaw art, which is unique to the Kimberley, has been dated at over 17,000 years old. There is also the opportunity to visit the crash site of a DC3 aircraft, located on the eastern side of Vansittart Bay. As we continue our journey, witness the rugged terrain and ancient weathered rocks from the vessel while cruising towards the Mitchell River.

DAY 7: MITCHELL RIVER, SURVEYORS CREEK

We are now entering the incredible assortment of islands that form the Bonaparte Archipelago. Cruise to the Mitchell River, source of the magnificent Mitchell Falls, where you can charter a helicopter and take an exhilarating ride over the falls themselves. Drop a lure in later and perfect your fishing skills in these rich waters or go crocodile spotting. Late afternoon enjoy a swim in the cool tranquil waters of Surveyors Creek.

DAY 8: BIGGE ISLAND, CAREENING BAY

This morning we cruise north to Bigge Island, one of the largest sandstone islands and home to amazing Bradshaw art and Wandjina art with a maritime theme. As we continue our journey we visit Careening Bay, site of an ancient carved boab tree first visited in 1820 by Phillip Parker King while on a hydrographic survey of the Australian coastline.

DAY 9: PRINCE REGENT RIVER, KING CASCADE, CATHEDRAL FALLS

Early morning we cruise through St George Basin, a stunning inland sea. Leaving the vista of the mighty Mt Trafalgar and Mt Waterloo, we cruise up the Prince Regent River, marvelling at the pristine waterway that cuts through sandstone cliffs and gorges. Arriving at the spring-fed King Cascade, admire the rush of water cascading in breathtaking tiers, surrounded by lush ferns and a myriad of wildlife. Climb above the falls for an unforgettable swim in a massive crystal clear pool. Be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the magnificent Prince Regent River in the distance – wilderness adventuring at its best! Late afternoon join our guides for an excursion to Cathedral Falls, while spotting crocodiles and flying foxes. Alternatively fish the Prince Regent River which is renowned for big barra and Threadfin Salmon.

DAY 10: CAMDEN HARBOUR, KURI BAY, LANGII

At nearby Camden Harbour, we visit forlorn settlers’ graves on Sheep Island and soak up the history of the early European settlement. Take one of the tenders for a spot of exploration, have a go at fishing or collect rock oysters. Alternatively relax on the sundeck to take in the beautiful scenery. We then cruise between Augustus Island and the mainland, passing the remote pearling settlement of Kuri Bay. Late afternoon we visit the mysterious cove at Langii and witness the ‘Petrified Warriors’. These remarkable sandstone pillars represent the warriors killed in a Dreamtime battle.

DAY 11: RAFT POINT, SALE RIVER, DOUBTFUL BAY

This morning we cruise to Steep Island and anchor below Raft Point, as we prepare to walk to the caves perched on the hill. Here is some of the finest well-preserved Wandjina art in the Kimberley. From the top we have an amazing view of the Kimberley coast. We then explore the Sale River and take an excursion upstream for a dip in the spring-fed rainforest pools, and on the journey home, view ancient rock art from the tenders. As the sun begins to set, we fish the inlets of Doubtful Bay for the elusive Barramundi and Threadfin Salmon.

DAY 12: RED CONE CREEK, MONTGOMERY REEF, COLLIER BAY

Take a tender excursion to Red Cone Creek for a refreshing swim at Ruby Falls, or join our guides to try your luck at mud crabbing. We then cruise to the amazing Montgomery Reef, which covers more than 300km2, making it Australia’s largest inshore reef. Watch as the tide falls right before your eyes, creating a waterfall effect as the reef rises out of the water. Then take a ride in the tenders to observe many marine species, including turtles and sea birds. Late afternoon try your luck at Barramundi fishing in Collier Bay or alternatively relax on board and take in the beautiful scenery.

DAY 13: TALBOT BAY, DUGONG BAY, BUCCANEER ARCHIPELAGO

Cruise to Talbot Bay, home to one of the icons of the Kimberley coast, the spectacular Horizontal Falls. Take a tender and head in for an up-close and exhilarating ride through this natural phenomenon. Join a scenic excursion up the back of Cyclone Creek to marvel at the amazing rock formations. In and around Dugong Bay, we take a scenic tender excursion and cool off with a refreshing swim in one of the freshwater pools. In the afternoon we cross the vast King Sound, cruising through the thousands of islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago towards Cape Leveque at sunset, as we journey through the night towards Broome.

DAY 14: CAPE LEVEQUE – BROOME

Arrive into Broome early morning. Enjoy your last breakfast on board before saying goodbye to the crew of the Kimberley Quest II. Disembarkation is at approximately 8.00am, where a courtesy vehicle will transfer you to your accommodation or airport.

DAY 1: BROOME – CAPE LEVEQUE

Your Adventure begins when a courtesy vehicle picks you up from your accommodation at approximately 4.30pm and transfers you to the Kimberley Quest II, where you will be welcomed on board by your captain and crew. Enjoy a relaxing drink as you watch the sun dip below the horizon, while cruising past the famous Cable Beach.  An expedition that is truly beyond adventure has begun!

DAY 2: BUCCANEER ARCHIPELAGO, DUGONG BAY AND TALBOT BAY

This morning will find us crossing the vast King Sound, cruising through the thousands of islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago. In and around Dugong Bay, we take a scenic tender excursion and cool off with a refreshing swim in the freshwater pools. Around the corner lies Talbot Bay, home to one of the icons of the Kimberley coast, the spectacular Horizontal Falls. Take a tender and head in for an up-close and exhilarating ride through this natural phenomenon. In the afternoon take a scenic excursion up the back of Cyclone Creek to marvel at the amazing rock formations. 

DAY 3 & 4: COLLIER BAY, MONTGOMERY REEF AND RED CONE CREEK

Early morning we take you fishing in Collier Bay, your first chance to catch a Barramundi. We then cruise to the amazing Montgomery Reef, which covers more than 300km², making it Australia’s largest inshore reef. Watch as the tide falls right before your eyes, creating a waterfall effect. This morning we cruise out of the Prince Regent River and visit Careening Bay, site of an ancient carved boab tree first visited in 1820 by Phillip Parker King. Cruising through Scotts Strait viewing the amazing sea-caves and spectacular sandstone coastline of York Sound. Relax on board to another spectacular sunset as the sun sinks below the Kimberley horizon, while we cross Prince Frederick Harbour towards Swift Bay. 

DAY 9: SWIFT BAY AND CAPE VOLTAIRE

Step back to a land before time, viewing some of the finest examples of Kimberley rock art. Every period of Kimberley rock art is on display in and around this area. Let your imagination flow as we hike through the remote terrain, sit under rocky out-crops and marvel in the magnitude.

DAY 10 & 11: MITCHELL RIVER AND SURVEYORS CREEK

Early morning we cruise around Cape Londonderry, the most northerly point of Western Australia. We view more unbelievable Kimberley waterfalls namely Barramundi & Glycosmis. Try your luck at landing the elusive Barramundi whilst revelling in the remoteness of this magical region.

DAY 15: KOOLAMA BAY

Today we visit Koolama Bay, where the vessel “Koolama” was beached in February 1942, following an attack by the Japanese in World War II. The passengers were taken ashore by order of the ship’s master, and many had to walk overland on an epic cross-country trek. The ‘Koolama’ was unfortunately sunk off the Wyndham jetty during another air raid. Late afternoon take in more history at the survivors’ camp at Pangali Cove where you can enjoy a freshwater dip beneath a waterfall.

DAY 16: KING GEORGE RIVER

At high tide, we cross the sandbars of the King George River for a breathtaking cruise along this majestic cathedral-like gorge. Incredible scenery unfolds as we approach the King George Falls, through vertically-sided sandstone canyons, ending at the tallest waterfall in Western Australia. The Kimberley Quest II cruises to the base of the magnificent twin falls for a refreshing ‘Kimberley shower’. Overnight we anchor just metres away from the falls, with tranquil sounds and an extraordinary view from the bow.

DAY 17: KING GEORGE FALLS

This morning for those intrepid adventurers, you may climb to the top for a breathtaking vista of the river below, a truly humbling experience as you appreciate the immensity of this untamed landscape. Enjoy a well-deserved swim in one of the cool upper pools, followed by an excursion to the East Arm Falls.

DAY 18: CAPE BERNIER AND SEAPLANE BAY

This morning we visit two sites associated with the German Aviators Bertram & Klaussman. In 1932, the pair were blown off course in their seaplane Atlantis and endured starvation in the wilderness, before being found and rescued by Gwini Aborigines after 40 days. 

DAY 19: BERKELEY RIVER

Today we cruise up the Berkeley River, taking in the numerous waterfalls and ancient sandstone escarpments. Take a tender excursion with our guides to go crocodile-spotting and bird watching. Marvel at the Amphitheatre Falls and then cool off in beautiful freshwater pools. Late afternoon we have another tender excursion opportunity up to the back of the Berkeley River, where the salt water meets the fresh water. Fish off the flat rocks for Barramundi lurking in the rapids, or alternatively walk to a freshwater pool to enjoy a relaxing dip. Tonight we savour the surroundings anchoring near a secluded waterfall.

DAY 20: BERKELEY RIVER TO CAMBRIDGE GULF

Today commences by taking in the magnitude of the Berkeley River – with a leisurely cruise aboard Quest Express taking in the ancient sandstone escarpments. The Berkeley River offers stunning ochre-tinted sandstone scenery, amphitheatre waterfalls and beautiful freshwater pools, perfect for a refreshing dip. You have one last chance to catch the elusive Barramundi or alternatively go wildlife-spotting or bird watching.

DAY 21: WYNDHAM PORT, KUNUNURRA

Arrive into Wyndham Port early morning. Enjoy your last breakfast on board before saying goodbye to the crew of the Kimberley Quest II. Board a courtesy coach at 7.30am for transfer to Kununurra (100km), arriving at approximately 9.00am.
