The best month to cruise the Kimberley

“When’s the best time to cruise the Kimberley?”

Our local staff offer an answer to the question we get asked the most!

Ok, let us walk you through the seasons of the Kimberley:

WATERFALL SEASON MARCH-APRIL

The months directly after the Wet Season (March and April) are hot and humid, but this is the best time for waterfalls (if it’s been a good Wet Season). The Kimberley receives 90% of its annual rainfall over the Wet, topping up waterfalls and revitalising the landscape. If you can brave the heat and humidity, these months are the best to see the waterfalls gushing. The hotter months are also best for Barramundi fishing (March, April, August, September).

MID-WINTER MAY-SEPTEMBER

There is no winter in the Kimberley – just 2 predominant seasons. The Wet and the Dry. For folks living in the southern parts of Australia, their mid-winter months of June and July are a popular time to escape the winter blues and enjoy the Kimberley’s never-ending sunshine. Keep in mind that these months are busiest, especially during School Holidays and the Broome Cup (horse racing), when accommodation is limited and flights cost more. Book flights/hotels well in advance.

HUMPBACK WHALE MIGRATION JULY-OCTOBER

The Kimberley is an important breeding ground for humpback whales and they migrate from Antarctica to spend July to October in the warm and sheltered bays of the Kimberley coastline. This is a really special time to cruise the coastline!

BARRA SEASON MARCH, APRIL, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER

Barramundi fishing is best when the weather is warmer and sea temps are hotter The months of March, April, August, September and October are prime Barra time.

FULL MOON YEAR-ROUND

During the full moon, there’s the largest amount of of tidal movement. This is when tidal attractions such as the Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef are most impressive.

As you can see, the ‘best time’ to cruise the Kimberley depends on what you want to see and do! Call our office for a chat and to find out what’s available / when. Freecall 1800 677 830. We look forward to chatting!
