“The Kimberley Gorges itinerary features the northern half of the Kimberley. Here the landscape is dominated by the Kimberley’s stunning gorge country including the Berkeley River, the King George Falls and the Mitchell River. Includes helicopter/aircarft transfer to Broome.”

optional extra $250 pp: el questro day tour pre-cruise embarkation |
Only available with the Kimberley Cruise Centre!
Departs on demand. Did you know that El Questro is just a short detour from the road between Kununurra and Wyndham? Join a local guide for a small group 4wd tour of El Questro wilderness park, connecting with your cruise. This morning your guide will meet you and give you a short tour of Kununurra. You will then continue on to El Questro, crossing the Diversion Dam enroute. At El Questro, first stop is Zebedee Springs. A short walk leads through a rainforest of Livistonia Palms, ending at a series of rocky thermal pools set at the base of sheer cliffs. Next stop ‘The Steakhouse’ for lunch (own expense), overlooking the Pentecost River. Time permitting, enjoy a refreshing swim in a Pandanus fringed waterhole before we head to Emma Gorge Resort. Walk to the picturesque Emma Gorge waterfall – a great spot for a swim and afternoon tea. If you prefer to miss the walk, stay and enjoy the resort’s shady pool and bar area. This afternoon we head to Wyndham for a brief tour including the 5 Rivers Lookout and the Dreamtime Statues. Optional extra: overnight at El Questro prior to your cruise. Please enquire. |
NIGHT 1
(If you haven’t joined the El Questro day tour mentioned above) Join a coach transfer in Kununurra – your “welcome aboard” the magnificent True North will be in the frontier town of Wyndham. Embarkation is at 1700 – time for a cocktail with your fellow adventurers before departing at approximately 1830. Dinner is served shortly after leaving port and then it’s an overnight cruise to the Berkeley River.
DAY 1
If you’re onboard to ‘catch a barra’ you’ll be out of bed nice and early this morning! The Berkeley rarely disappoints! Take a walk to one of the Kimberley’s most beautiful waterholes before we enjoy a leisurely lunch-time cruise to Koolama Bay. Learn about the wreck of the Koolama and enjoy a short walk to a plaque erected by a relative of one of the survivors. You will find the delights of Tranquil Bay to be irresistible when we go ashore for sunset drinks! Our anchorage tonight is at the mouth of the King George River.
DAY 2
As soon as the tide is high enough, we’ll cross the sand bars at the river mouth to reveal a breathtaking river vista! Our journey upstream will take us to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ – The King George Falls! Here we anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and you will find endless places to explore! Climb, or take the helicopter, to the top of the falls for a cruise highlight! Visit waterholes, swim at “The Crevice” or just relax with a drink whilst eating fresh oysters off the rocks! Just the thought of leaving this magnificence will inspire mutiny!
DAY 3
The morning will be spent calming the ‘mutineers’ – a morning bathed in the absolute splendour of The Falls before we slip away for another mighty Kimberley river – ‘the Drysdale! Explore the Drysdale and catch one of our favourite fish, the impressive mangrove jack! The tenders will head ‘up-river’ on a barra expedition complete with scones and billy tea! There will also be opportunities to indulge in some beachcombing and in the afternoon, join a scenic flight to Cape Londonderry – the northern most point of Western Australia!
DAY 4
Today you will have an opportunity to see the “Bradshaws” – ancient rock art that pre-dates other examples of Aboriginal culture. In fact, they are possibly the oldest ‘paintings’ known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always a ‘big hit’ – another breathtaking helicopter flight and, True North’s mouth-watering fare alongside a picture-perfect waterfall in remote far-north Western Australia! The tenders will be busy exploring local beaches and rivers, and, we also visit an isolated site in the rainforest where a lone bomber crashed during WWII.
DAY 5
The Mitchell River is renowned for big barra and even bigger crocs! The expedition boats will head ‘up river’ to the scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim (no crocs here!) The fishermen will again join the hunt for the elusive barramundi and, there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over an ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls! Then, join the crew for cocktail hour before experiencing another unique dining experience.
DAY 6
Start the day with the ‘hunt for the black-lip oyster’ and then visit a Kailis pearl farm off Winyalkin Island. <
Farm staff will explain the intriguing process of ‘growing’ pearls and one of our guests might be lucky enough to keep a treasure from the sea! There are also some excellent examples of both Wandjina and Bradshaw art nearby and the waters are alive with light game species such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel. In the afternoon we will see the acclaimed Wandjina “contact art” on Bigge Island.
DAY 7
All too soon it’s time to leave the ultimate luxury of the True North. However the adventure is not over yet – you’ll start the day early with another exhilarating helicopter experience! The Hunter River is about as far away as you can get in Australia and your transfer ashore will be over a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests, surrounded by rainforest encrusted mountains and home to man-eating crocodiles. Then a light aircraft transfer to Broome and, our crew will already be looking forward to the next opportunity to welcome you aboard the TRUE NORTH!
This itinerary is provided as an example only – tide and prevailing conditions may cause variation.
Scenic helicopter flights can be purchased as a package or individually.
